Vermont’s New Way Forward

Vermont Born and Raised

I was born and raised in Shaftsbury Vermont, where I have now lived the majority of my life. I come from a family of 6 in which I am the 3rd of 4 kids. I have a brother and 2 sisters and I am the last sibling to be living in Vermont. My mother is a special needs instructor and my father has been a builder his entire life. Growing up, my family was in and out of poverty, but we made do with what we had and we learned to enjoy the simple things in life. In 1998 I graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington and soon after enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly following in my grandfather’s footsteps. After being discharged, I attended the University of Vermont, where I was the first in my family to graduate college, with a degree in History. After college I was lucky enough to find a job farming in my hometown and have been growing food for my community for over 12 years now. Being a steward of the land has taught me many lessons about the importance of the environment and agriculture to our state. I have been honored to be a part of such a loving and open community where I have forged many bonds throughout my years here. I love that I can go into the local diner and they know my name. I love the flick of the wrist waves I get while walking the backroads with my husband. This is what makes Vermont so special—we are neighbors above all else.
